PANZ Young Designer of the Year
Carla Sy
Highly Commended 2013
Carla Sy's background is in visual communication design, which she studied at Massey University, graduating with First Class Honours in 2009. She was determined to get into the book design industry, so she asked Random House to help her gain some work experience. For the following year, they took her under their wing and she has been working as one of their full time designers for three years. Carla says, ‘book design is one of the most interesting industries, where no two jobs are the same ... It’s such an intricate and developmental process, and I enjoy being a part of it.’ |
Judges’ Comments Carla’s portfolio showcased originality and creativity, from her handmade cover for Once Were Warriors to the pairing of fonts and painting for Letters of Frank Sargeson. She can sensitively design for classic and modern subjects, and shows versatility in the way she uses typefaces. Nadia’s Kitchen is a very fresh and modern design, and we love the way the recipes are structured and the uneven borders on the photography give it an edge. Carla has a real talent in making the dullest covers come to life.
