Format: 250 x 200 mm, 424pp, casebound with wibalin buckram and machine varnish. A fold-out poster of New Zealand baches and cribs is adhered to the inside back cover. The cover features artwork by Geoffrey Nottman.
Judges’ Comments Recipes and Stories — the byline tells us that we are not only going to get the ‘how to’ but something a little more. This is true for the design too. While we have the elegant typesetting of the recipe in a structure most readers and cooks are accustomed to, there are some other lovely moments — the large coloured type at each chapter opener, the back endpapers extra of a poster of ‘Baches and Cribs’ and of course the nostalgia of the cover, with its wood-block-esque illustration and muted colour palette. Additionally, we think that Eat Up New Zealand will appeal to the ‘kiwi bloke’, the cook, and the cook book addict with a design that successfully pairs photographs and text, stories and food.
