ALLEN & UNWIN YOUNG DESIGNER OF THE YEAR AWARD 2017
Finalist
Leon Mackie
After graduating from Massey University School of Design Leon Mackie’s first job was a designer of educational publications for Learning Media limited. He then moved to Melbourne where he designed trade books for Lonely Planet and then as a senior designer at Scholastic Australia in Sydney. Since moving back to New Zealand Leon has worked in both freelance book design and as a senior designer in a busy Wellington design studio. For more examples of Leon’s work see leonmackie.com
Judges’ Comments A small but accomplished portfolio. The judges were particularly taken by the charming and well considered poetry book Worsley Enchanted, with its black stitching, a nod to handmade journals and rigging. His work represents a range of approaches and the hand drawn type for If I Had An Elephant is a clever solution for such a quirky book.
We look forward to seeing more of Mackie’s work in the future.
