| Kate Barraclough graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Design (Hons) and started out as the junior designer for Random House in Auckland. She then moved to London where she set up as a freelancer, maintaining her contacts in New Zealand as well as working for a number of London-based publishers and design agencies. Now, back in Auckland, she is still designing books, this time from her studio space on K Rd. Kate Barraclough says, ‘I wouldn’t trade my job for anything!’ |
Judges’ Comments Kate blew us away with her versatile style and palette of fonts. She designs appropriately for the subject, in an accessible way that attracts readers. We loved the playful, quirky design of The Food Truck Cookbook, and felt she captured the brand perfectly in this design. The cover for Soon was a favourite, with the bright fonts working well over the modern image, making it really stand out. The Power of Us used beautiful typography, which let the photography shine. We felt all her books were strong and diverse.
