Judges’ Comments Singing Home The Whale is an impressive contribution by young designer Carla Sy. The densely illustrated chapter pages were synchronous with the cover design and were balanced by clean typographic page layouts. The cover is enticing, with its perspective of a whale in silhouette circling below a boat. It’s a subtly tactile cover. The texture shift between matt laminate and spot varnish gives a watery sparkle when tilted in light.
