Designer: Philip Kelly
Title: The Domain
Publisher: Victoria University Press
Format: 255 x 205mm, 240pp, casebound, sewn in 16pp sections. Cover printed CMYK on linen finish Wibalin stock over board and trimmed flush on 3 sides to expose the greyboard edges with a one-colour belly band wrapped vertically around the back case.
The binding and trimming, which exposes the cover boards, references Hipkin’s ongoing interest in Brutalist architecture. The exposed materials echo the use of raw exposed concrete and Hipkins’ oft used method of displaying unframed photographs. The book utilised two paper stocks: a 150gsm Matt Art paper printed CMYK plus spot varnish for the main essays and plate section; and an archive section printed one colour onto 124gsm uncoated grey paper that contains previously published texts on Hipkins’ work.
Typography: All headlines and body text set in an unnamed and as yet unreleased version of a new type family drawn by Kris Sowesby from the Klim Type Foundry.
Judges’ Comments: A striking and atmospheric publication from an iconographer of desire, travel and time. The slipband on the outer back cover is an elegant treatment allowing the photograph full bleed on the cover to be enjoyed, with minimal distraction for the reader. The paper stock choices show consideration and complement the other design decisions. The CMYK Grey and green printed rectangles on opening pages, do however seem at odds with the paper stock (matt grey) later in the book.
