Convening judge Jenny Nicholls works for the national current affairs monthly North and South. Her work involves thinking up visual concepts for the cover, art directing and styling photography, editing photography, commissioning photographers, and designing page layouts for the magazine. Nicholls was the Art Director of Metro for many years, has trained in journalism as well as graphic design, and enjoys writing. Nicholls has won eight Qantas and Magazine Publisher Association (MPA) awards for best magazine cover, as well as the coveted MPA supreme designer of the year award. She has judged prestigious photography awards, tutored in design and writes book reviews and travel features for North and South.
Roger Parsonswas bookseller and owner of Parsons Bookshop in Auckland – a bookshop specialising in fine art and New Zealand books – along with his wife, Helen, for thirty-six years. A former New Zealand diplomat, Parsons has an MA in Political Studies and English from Victoria University. Now retired, he is a keen tramper, mountaineer and fixed-rope climber (via ferrata) and a grandfather of four.
Gideon Keithhas worked as a graphic designer and creative director for over twenty-five years. With over 450 book and magazine credits, publication design has been an enduring passion. Keith has been recognised with multiple design and advertising industry awards. He has spent eighteen years running a business and leading creative teams with clients spanning New Zealand, Australia, Asia, the Pacific and the USA including high-profile organisations such as Apple, Nescafe, Landrover, Auckland Airport and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. Keith is now Creative Partner at Strategy Auckland.
Young Designer of the Year Judge
Keely O'Shannessy is a graphic designer and artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. She graduated from AUT with a Bachelor of Visual Arts in 1998 and then moved to Melbourne where she studied Art Curatorship at Melbourne University, and Electronic Design and Interactive Media at RMIT. After several years as a video artist and multimedia designer, she moved back to Auckland in 2006 and started working as a freelance graphic designer. Since then O’Shannessy has designed books and book covers for Penguin, Random House, AUP, VUP and Awa Press. She has won and been shortlisted for numerous book design awards including Awa Press Young Designer of the Year, 2010.
