Designer Alan Deare (Area Design) Title On Song: Stories Behind New Zealand’s Pop Classics by Simon Sweetman Publisher Penguin Group Format 260 x 210mm, 240pp, hardback, section sewn, head and tail bands Judges' Comments A book to truly celebrate New Zealand pop classics: bold, brash, colourful and entertaining. The typography shouts eloquently from the pages, and the sometimes challenging use of solid colours brings it all together. |

Designer Fiona Lascelles Title Big House Small House: New Homes by New Zealand Architects by John Walsh and Patrick Reynolds Publisher Random House Format 260 x 300mm, 432pp, hardback Judges' Comments This huge book (432 pages) is a perfect example of well-executed book design. It maintains an interest and pace without favouring one project over another. It’s designed for the audience but the design never gets in the way. |

Designer Margaret Cochran Title Buller’s Birds of New Zealand: The Complete Work of JG Keulemans by Geoff Norman Publisher Te Papa Press Format 360 x 270mm, 260pp, hardback with slip case, cloth covered, de-bossed, gold-gilded pages, head and tail bands, ribbon Judges' Comments A wonderful book with very high production values harking back to classical publishing. Gilt edges, slip case and large format bring this package together beautifully. |
||
Designer Greg Simpson (Greg Simpson Design) Title An Indescribable Beauty: Letters Home to Germany from Wellington, New Zealand 1859 and 1862 by Friedrich August Krull Publisher Awa Press Format 180 x 170mm, 144pp, hardback, quarterbound, uncoated cover with spot UV Judges' Comments An interesting little book – the design delivers on the classic adventure story that it tells. The typographic detailing and layouts are wonderfully appropriate. |

Designer Duncan Munro, photography by Anne Noble Title These Rough Notes by Bill Manhire, Anne Noble, Norman Meehan, and Hannah Griffin Publisher Victoria University Press Format 210 x 210mm, 64pp, hardback, section sewn Judges' Comments In almost diametric opposition to On Song: These Rough Notes takes the austerity of Antarctica and brings it together with beautiful restraint. The simplicity and minimalism means every element needs to work in concert to maintain a pace that complements and joins the varied material. |
