Judges’ comments: “Nice production, very neat. Nice shape and format.”
“A good transparent typographic choice that doesn’t distract you. The type is set with comfortable line lengths, and has an even grey on the page. The layout is unfussy, and the use of bold orange on the cover, flaps and fabric case gives package a bit of a punch.”
“Nice punchy use of orange with black and white images. Plain, justified texts and footnotes. The addition of the “silver fern” paragraph breaks are too fussy within this context perhaps?”
“Such a great many sports playing New Zealander’s yet oddly a pakeha dominance to the photographs? The historic photo resources posed a tricky editorial and design question. The grid of back cover, and endpapers are a sound solution yet the cover image seems slightly soulless. This may have been an editorial or author choice. The orange book cloth and pop of colour a brave attempt to add contemporary appeal.”
